Most wanted Bangladesh mob boss hides and operates in Budapest, Hungary

Al Jazeera has uncovered a Bangladesh-centred underground organisation with connections and members all over the world. Unfortunately, one of the leads is connected to Hungary, as a key figure of the organisation fled to Hungary from Bangladesh and, presumably, he is currently in Budapest.

24 writes that the man called Haris Ahmed, one of the most sought-after Bangladeshi criminals who has been convicted of murder for his involvement in the 1996 murder of Mustafizur Rahman Mustafa,

fled to Budapest, Hungary, and is presumably still living there under the pseudonym Mohammad Hasan.

According to the article by Al Jazeera, the criminal group, which Haris Ahmed is a member of, is linked to and is working with the Bangladeshi secret services and the Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina. The criminal organisation offers government contracts and high positions in exchange for money. Al Jazeera has hidden camera footage as evidence; on the tape, Haris Ahmed precisely mentions the bribe money involved. The article says that

Ahmed is hiding behind a false identity in Budapest and conducts his underground businesses from there.

Haris and his brother, Anis Ahmed, who have both been convicted for the 1996 murder, had to flee Bangladesh to avoid life imprisonment. The victim of the murder was a member of a rival political group. He was gunned down on the open street and was shot nine times. Al Jazeera found out that they were able to flee Bangladesh, as

their brother, Aziz Ahmed, General of the Bangladesh Army and confidant of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, arranged the escape.

Recently, there was a huge drug bust in Hungary by the Hungarian Police.

There are rumours that General Aziz Ahmed keeps close relations with his brothers and often meets them, despite their international status. A photo made in 2019 attests to this as the two convicted brothers were seen in Bangladesh attending the wedding of the son of the General (their nephew). The Bangladeshi president was also seen among the wedding guests.

An article published on 444 says that Haris Ahmed has bought real estate in Budapest and has also operated a store, restaurants, and a currency exchange in Hungary’s capital, even though Haris has been on Interpol’s list of the most dangerous criminals for years. The article says that Haris arrived in Budapest five years ago with the false identity of Mohammad Hasan. In a recording, he was heard saying the following:

“If anything goes down in Hungary, then I know about it. So far, nothing has gone through without my nod. […] If they show me one order they have taken over my head, then I will cut his ears off and feed them to the dogs.”

The article notes that since Haris Ahmed moved to Budapest, the Hungarian-Bangladeshi relations have noticeably grown. In 2016, Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, visited Budapest and negotiated with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Also, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó travelled to Bangladesh last September to discuss three possible areas of cooperation with Bangladesh’s Minister of Trade.
